Program Notes
Canopy for percussion ensemble is a depiction of animal life in the rain forest. For each animal, a field recording was transcribed and used as the basis for its musical representation. Then, an amalgam of all the sounds was used to create the main keyboard melody. The animals were further grouped by time of day they are active as well as by the areas they are commonly found. As the piece develops, the animals not only come and go, but interact with each other, creating new themes and variations.
This piece was commissioned by the Coppell Middle School North Honor Winds, conducted by Jeremy Lindquist for their State Honor Band concert at the 2016 Texas Music Educators Association Convention.
