Program Notes

The collegiate life has never sounded more inspiring and reachable than with this overture. Calling University embodies the various college programs and opportunities through sound and imagination. The music is as challenging as it is encouraging, with memorable melodies combining with mixed meter.

This is the first of a collection of wind ensemble/concert band music created with the intention of it being capable of both concert and commercial use. The idea for this type of hybrid music came from a discussion with my private composition instructor, Professor Patrick J. Burns. Before, Calling University was just another concert opener. But as the music progressed, we noticed that it began sounding more like a cinematic trailer or soundtrack. After that, we’ve reviewed most of the music that we’ve worked on before and noticed a trend that many of my latest compositions sounded very cinematic. That’s when I began thinking that maybe I could start writing more cinematic music in a concert band setting.

The inspiration for Calling University came from both my experience as an undergraduate music major and a love for film music. It is an exciting cinematic piece that celebrates the wonderful college experience. The music is written like a collage, with each section embodying another great element of campus life: setting the various elements, including the buildings and halls, recreation, sports, visual and performing arts, and academics to music. One can almost imagine being there and experiencing each element as the music goes on. My hope is that you will be able to imagine it too.

- Program Note by the composer

The Concert-to-Soundtrack Series is a collection of concert band and wind ensemble music created for the intended use of both concert performance and cinematic use. Its mission is to bring the wind band sound into the commercial world. It is the beginning of a new hybrid of concert and cinematic wind band music that is accessible to everyone for purchase, performance, and creative use.
