Program Notes

Bravado Tango is a charismatic work for beginning band. The drama of the opening fanfare is followed by the A theme introduced in the flutes, clarinets, and trumpets. This theme is accompanied by a dancing bass line and driving percussion parts. At measure 15, a flowing B theme is introduced in the flutes and oboes, while the clarinets and alto saxophones provide a sparse accompaniment based on a traditional tango rhythm. The melody and accompaniment pass through several different voices as the theme builds up steam. At measure 29, the A theme resumes with additional interest added by a horn counter line. The addition of the guiro to the percussion instrumentation enhances the groove as the piece pushes to its close.
