Program Notes
Located northwest of Tahiti, Bora Bora has been described by James Michener, author of Tales of the South Pacific, as "The most beautiful island in the world". This suite in three connected movements musically illustrates the grandeur, beauty, and native traditions of this paradise.
I. Otemanu (Tombstone Mountain) - Jutting from the center like a granite tombstone, Mount Otemanu is the defining centerpiece of the majestic, mountainous island. In contrast with the precipice is the lush, palm-covered landscape and quiet daily life. This movement opens with a view from the arriving plane as the clouds suddenly break, revealing the ominous Mt. Otemanu.
II. Moana (Lagoon) - Surrounded by a continuous ring of coral and motus (small coral islands), the main island's protected lagoon is a turquoise paradise, teeming with an exotic array of sea life. This movement begins at the sparkling surface, descends into the multi-colored "other-world", and casually observes the endless array of exotic fish, rays, and sharks. As the diver ascends back to the shimmering surface, the distant sounds of drums can be heard.
III. Nuna'a (The People) - Based upon traditional sounds of Bora Boran chant, song, and dance, this movement describes an evening gathering of the people. Truly isolated from the rest of the world, the people of Bora Bora have clung to a quite traditional primitive life. Although the chant and song are flowing and soothing, the dance is frenetic and sensual.
