Program Notes

This stylish work is written in the traditional march form and style but is anything but traditional. The music is fresh, invigorating and thrilling! A brilliant trumpeting fanfare introduces low brass melodies and running woodwind lines that rise and fall like the wind. Then the exuberant Bonnie Blue melody brings everything together for a rousing finish.

- Program Note by publisher

The Bonnie Blue Flag is an 1861 marching song from the American Civil War. The lyrics were written by Harry McCarthy, while the melody was taken from an Irish song entitled The Irish Jaunting Car. Like most songs of the Civil War, both Union and Confederate soldiers had versions of the song. The original melody can be heard in the trio of Bonnie Blue March. The melodies of the other strains are clearly derived from this tuneful and popular marching song.
