Program Notes

In A-B-A form, this piece consists of two major themes, both of which are stated in the 16-measure introductory section. Although the composition is in large part romantic in style, it offers young performers an opportunity to experience the spritely 6/8 of the Allegro moderato as well as the romantic legato of the Andante cantabile section.

Many acquaintances of the author, band directors with consistently splendid music programs, teach in the area of the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains of the eastern United States. It is to these friends, and in particular to Diana Love and her fine young musicians at the Sandusky Middle School in Lynchburg, Virginia, that this composition is dedicated. Blue Ridge Rhapsody was first performed in the spring of 1982 in Lynchburg, the composer conducting.
