Program Notes
The Blue Hornets was commissioned for the Louise, Texas, High School Band by its director, Gary Poffenbarger, a friend of the composer. The opening fanfare is a tongue-in-cheek homage to Ruffles & Flourishes, a standard military ceremonial work which Poffenbarger and Martin had played numerous times during their service in the Air Force Bands. The Louise High School mascot is the blue hornet, so the name of the march was chosen as a dedication to the commissioning organization.
