Program Notes

This piece is for a saxophone quartet and band. It is one of the pieces commissioned by JWECC that features various instruments, in addition to Six Sticks, composed for three snare drummers and band, and Four Clarineters, for four clarinets and band. The title of "Sassofonisti" is the plural form of the word for saxophone players in Italy, and “Tempo”, which means “the weather” as well as the tempo of the music. “Bel Tempo” means nice weather, and therefore the whole phrase Bel Tempo pel i Sassofonisti translates to “Nice weather for saxophone players."

This piece is a two-part composition, starting from ragtime in the first part and transitioning to Dorian mode. I expressed the first part as having a stroll through the town on a beautiful day, and the second part as an evening stroll through the night town, in a slightly adult atmosphere. Please enjoy some musical tricks you might find during the performance of this piece.
