Program Notes

Beautiful, Inside and Out was commissioned by the Lexington, AL, High School Band, directed by David Wiseman, in 2019. It is dedicated to Amy Wampler, an active supporter of Lexington High School -- including the Lexington Band -- who lost her struggle with cancer in 2018.

The request was for a simple, melodic piece that would serve as a tribute to Amy, but not be about the disease itself. Because she was a proud alum of the University of North Alabama (where she was in the marching band and served as "Head Lionette"), a variation of the UNA fight song appears midway as a brass choir and bridge to the final section. Additionally, Amy often spoke fondly of her participation in the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority while she was a student at UNA -- a brief quote from their song I Hear the Call of Zeta can be heard just prior to the brass choir bridge.
