Program Notes

Barbaresque was commissioned by Sendai Johnan High School Wind Band and premiered at the 2018 All-Japan Band Competition qualifying. The band had only eleven players including two woodwinds, so it was scored mainly for brass. In 2019, to prepare for published release, the composer expanded the orchestration to 20 players, making good use of woodwind colors while maintaining the mood of the original score.

While the introductory unisons emphasize dynamism and strength, a contemporary-themed, modern and exotic flavor is part and parcel of the piece. In the middle section, detached solo lines appear, followed by a short, elegant waltz. Major themes return to build to an emphatic conclusion.
