Program Notes

The third movement of Aragon 1945-1952 was inspired by the 1947 hit Dance, Ballerina, Dance written by Bob Russell and Carl Sigman. Vaughn Monroe and later Nat King Cole would have hit recordings of the songs.

Scored as a relaxed beguine, the piece effectively captures the emotion and beauty of the popular song with memorable melodic material, sweeping lines in the upper woodwinds, solos for horn and trumpet, rhythmic variety and a laid-back rhythmic groove, and an appealing big band sound throughout.
