Program Notes

This whimsical offering represents a story about a young boy who is chosen to confront a giant in order to learn his secrets. The music paints a colorful scene with lilting melodies and rhythms creating a fairytale soundscape. A great example of musical storytelling that's a pure delight for performers and audiences.

They chose the boy, Phillip, to make the journey. Though he was only fourteen years old, he was known throughout the village to have a bright mind, a kind soul and a brave heart. It took him three arduous days to travel through the mighty forest, and another two days to hike the treacherous mountain.

On the sixth day he arrived to find the giant asleep and unaware of his presence. With a touch of trepidation, he meekly called out to the giant. The giant did not hear. Gathering his courage, he called out again with his loudest voice, "Awaken, giant, I am here to learn what it is you know!" Upon hearing the boy's voice, the giant arose and roared at the intruder. Phillip again summoned his courage and spoke, "Giant, I am here. Will you teach me?"

There is a giant in all of us.
