Program Notes

With over one hundred compositions to his name, Claude T. Smith was among the most prolific wind composers of his time.  His works contributed greatly to the development of scholastic bands throughout the United States due to his commitment to writing engaging and significant parts for each member of the ensemble.  Written in 1978, Anthem for Winds and Percussion is a prime example of Smith’s compositional approach with its accessible tonal language, tuneful melody, and metric variations.  Over the course of the piece the opening theme (“anthem”) is eventually played by every wind section in the band, and utilizes a wide variety of time signatures. Smith’s orchestration and formal choices in this piece provide a classic example of accessible wind band writing of the time.

Master composer Claude T. Smith graced the band world with many wonderful pieces, and this classic continues to be one of his most performed works. The opening theme sparkles with rhythmic vitality and harmonic devices that still sound fresh today. The contrasting Andante segment is lush and tender before returning to the fast main theme.
