Program Notes

And We Proceeded On was commissioned by the Washburn, N.D., High School Band to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Washburn is the site of Fort Mandan, where the expedition spent its first winter. The piece depicts several different thoughts concerning the journey including a river theme; an adventure theme; a "Sacagawea" theme; Camp Fortune theme; and concludes with the Great Divide theme.

This fresh composition is an interpretive piece based on the Lewis and Clark Expedition of the early 19th century. The work is enhanced by the variety of moods achieved compositionally. A majestic feel permeates the opening. Native American motives enter as the journey continues. Of particular note is an expressive section which evokes the rippling water sounds of the rivers they traveled. Solos are offered for flute (or recorder), oboe and timpani. This intriguing work has a fascinating story to tell.
