Program Notes

This musical work, regal in nature, celebrates the important and rewarding journey one takes when joining the band. The sweeping introduction builds to a majestic procession-like melody that is unrelenting in its forward motion. As the music develops it gives rise to a feeling of determination that is unmistakable and most impressive.

- Program Note from publisher

The composer writes:

I'll never forget being 11 years old and having the trumpet assigned to me for my beginning band class! Like many others, this seemingly simple decision had major implications on how I spent my teenage years – and still has a major impact on me today as an adult. I named my compositions And It Begins to celebrate the early stages in the journey of becoming a forever band kid.

The piece features a snare solo and a low winds feature, as well as extended harmonies in the middle section.

- Program Note from score

Written as a celebration of new beginnings, the melodic introduction at the beginning gives way to a snare drum and low winds feature before transitioning to a more lyrical middle section written in the Lydian mode. The work concludes with a return to the music from the snare and low winds first heard at the beginning.
