Program Notes

Agua Nocturna or "Water Night" is based on a poem of the same name by the Spanish poet Octavio Paz. Within this poem is much imagery dealing with water, darkness, sleep, and dreams. I attempted to capture these qualities in this piece through the use of improvisation, spatial elements, and some extended technique (including trumpets played into buckets of water). Agua Noctuna features a percussion quartet which is given instructions to improvise using various instruments throughout the piece.
